FROM DR SCHMITZ:
1) Influenza season is about to hit us in Maine. Please remind your providers of the importance of vaccination and appropriate use of a mask for patients with suspected influenza.
2) Southern Maine Health Care will be aligning the non-medication supplies available for EMS exchange at both campuses. Currently, there are some significant stocking discrepancies and we will be talking with you about proposed changes and what is / is not being used.
3) Southern Maine Health Care continues to investigate a successful process for helping EMS services when a patient experiences a cardiac arrest after transport to the hospital has been initiated. We continue to discuss the concerns about this practice and how best to help our shared patients and their families under this difficult circumstance with Maine EMS.

FIREFIGHTER NEAR MISS: Annual Physical Reveals Potentially Deadly Problem.
After undergoing an annual physical, a member was diagnosed with cancer. Early detection proved to be a lifesaver.
Event Description: While participating in an annual physical exam, a positive colon cancer was detected. This positive test was confirmed by an outside source. This case is one of four or five that have surfaced in the last three years. Extensive annual physical exams for all fire/rescue personnel are a must. In fact, an intense wellness-fitness program should be an integral part of every department. The annual physical exam is, in part, a discovery phase. Other components of a wellness-fitness program may help reduce the chance of developing this disease or at the very least promote early detection.

Should you respond to someone's home, and you think (or they tell you) they need help with paying for heating oil, put them in contact with Lyman's General Assistance Director. Priscilla Ouellette. Each ambulance clipboard has some of Priscilla's business cards. The beauty of Lyman's program is that it is fast. Priscilla can get them heating oil same day.
