Weekly Update for Friday, August 26, 2016

OPEN SHIFTS: No open shifts at the moment.  There was a small hick-up with the on-duty firefighter calendar. The Deputy deleted it.  However, it has been rebuilt. Please check it over for accuracy.

Reputation Management:   Over the years we've enjoyed strong support from the townspeople. Our reputation in our community is strong.  The "public trust" is something we have earned over the last 65 plus years. We earn it with each call we go on. It's very fragile. It doesn't take much to loose the trust of the people that we are sworn to protect.  Keep that in mind, always! Your conduct on and off duty is always under scrutiny.  If you're operating a fire department vehicle (code 3 or not), you're being watched. When your on scene, at a public event, at the station, your professionalism is being judged. When you're off duty at the store buying groceries, that fire department t-shirt gets noticed. When you're driving your personal car, that fire department plate is recognized. We as Firefighters are held to a higher standard than the general public. That is not a perk or privileged, it's a responsibility. We are often referred to as heroes. So when we do screw up, and we're human we're going to screw up, criticism falls on us a little  harder. Not because we're better than anyone else, but because people expect more from us. So when we don't live up to expectations, people aren't necessarily angry at us, it's worse, they're disappointed in us. We let them down.  People need to feel confident that we can come through for them in an emergency. Their observations of us is how they measure our competence.  So when you're in public, and you're recognized as a Firefighter, people are looking for you, are expecting you, to set the right example.  Step up!
