Weekly Update for Thursday, May 10, 2018

I'm getting this out a day early. I don't plan to be at the station tomorrow. My family is holding a committal service for my step-Dad Will who passed away last winter.
----

----
Station Grounds Clean up day:  Tomorrow 0800 to noon.
----
Impressive service:  Eight of us from GMFR headed to Bangor on Monday to pay respects to Sheriff's Corporal Eugene Cole. The service was impeccable. My estimate is over 7,000 in attendance from all corners of the Country and Canada. No matter how impressive the service, it still doesn't replace the loss. Jake's uncle was given a fitting send off.
----
Call Volume:  We've had a busy week. Last weekend alone (Friday through Sunday) we ran 15 calls.
This week, Monday through Thursday, we've run 8 calls. Monday we had an overdose save. Year to day we've run 291 calls for service. 51 calls ahead of last year on this day.
----
Chief Officer vacancy: Letters of Consideration are being accepted for candidates to fill the anticipated vacancy of Chief Operating Officer. Process details will be posted in Temporary Operating Guideline 3910-18-A. Deadline for letters is 1600 hours on 5/17/2018.
----
Extrication Class:  There is a sign up on the bulletin board for an extrication class being held here on June 2 and 3. We're having Maine-iacs Training provide the instruction. The practical evolution will be held at Copart on Sunday. Some of the scenarios will involve cars that rear end a school bus.
----
Southern Maine EMS Meeting: I attended the local EMS meeting this morning.  Lucas devices were the main topic of discussion. The Lucas device is basically an automatic CPR machine. The MDPB is considering authorizing their use in Maine. It is still a few years out yet. No progress to report on my pet project, paperless run reports. That is on the agenda for the regional meeting in Wells on May 23rd.
----
Student Update: The SMCC semester ends on Friday. Nikole (our remaining student) will be heading home for the summer. She'll be returning in the fall. We will be without students until September.  We will be selecting one student at the draft on June 2nd. My intentions are to host 2 students next year instead of three.
----
Week Swaps:  On the calendar, we are going to flip-flop weeks 4 and 5 in May. This is to allow time to prep trucks for the parade on the 28th.  Please come help get the trucks cleaned up.
----
The EMR-ISAC InfoGram for May 10, 2018 contains the following articles:
1. FBI releases active shooter 2016-2017 report
2. Rapid Wildfire Risk Assessments
3. Social capital key to better disaster resilience
4. Partnering See Something, Say Something with academic institutions

Firefighter Near Miss: Swift Water Rescue Boat Techniques
Training for each type of incident is one of the most important things we do. Making sure we don’t create a real victim out of a crew member is the challenge when water-rescue training requires live bait.
----
MX207: Will be racing Saturday and Sunday.
----
Events Next Week:  Saturday: 0800 Grounds clean up. Thursday: 1830 Fire Commission.
----

Have a great weekend,
Chief
