Weekly Update for Friday, July 20, 2019

I want to thank everyone who help organize and attended the services for Lee Littlefield. There was an unexpected number of people who attended. It all went very smoothly. I received many many compliments about your hospitality and support. The family was very grateful. Once again you all made a very positive impression on your community. More importantly, you all gave Lee a good send off.  Thank you.

Firefighter Near Miss: Moving apparatus, tight quarters and lots of people can create hazards.
"While inside the station when the tones went off for a fire run, I proceeded towards the apparatus bay to board the responding engine. The door that leads to the bay area is approximately three feet from the opening of the garage door of the apparatus bay. I did not realize that another member of our crew was backing in the tanker that normally sits in the bay closest to the door."

Even though he had a spotter, the way the station is laid out prevents us from seeing around the corner of the bay (or the spotter standing in the bay) because a set of gear lockers block the view when coming from the inside of the station to the apparatus bay from that door. I walked out into the bay in a rush and walked right in between the tanker and the spotter. Luckily the driver of the tanker saw me coming out of the door in his mirror and stopped. If the tanker had been another foot back, it would have hit me. There is now a sign posted on the door to watch out for backing apparatus.
