Firefighter Near Miss: Apparatus Blocking Pays Off. Summary: When responding to a roadway incident, creating a safe area to for responders to work in is essential. Using apparatus to block and protect that area is a great technique and when done correctly can provide substantial protection quickly.
Event Description: Units responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on a local interstate. Upon arrival, the weather was clear with no obstructions, and the pavement was dry. Responding units included two engines, a ladder company, a battalion chief and an ambulance.
The first engine on scene reported one car disabled on the outside shoulder. The first engine parked upstream of the scene to protect the shoulder and lane one. The second engine parked behind the first blocking lane. Proper placement of traffic cones was deployed to provide further safety measures for the incident. The engineer's side of the engine faced traffic at an approximate 40-degree angle.
After patient treatment, we prepared to leave the scene by removing the cones. While preparing to depart, an oncoming vehicle was heard skidding toward us and struck the rear engine on the left front siren and bumper. The car that hit us did not stop. No personnel injuries were sustained, with minor damage to an engine.
Always follow your best practices for traffic management. These procedures will keep you safe when an unexpected event occurs.
