FIREFIGHTER NEAR MIS: Smoke contains CO, HCN, HCl . . .
Summary: Wear an SCBA during overhaul and whenever smoke is present.
Event Description: The occupant of the involved unit was standing outside the building and stated that she saw flames on her stovetop. We entered the building with a pressurized water can and hand tools to locate the unit and determine our strategy. The involved unit was located at the top of the stairs, and we found a small fire on top of the stove. We heard the sprinkler head activated and witnessed water flow under the door. We pulled a pre-connect and extinguished the remaining fire. Positive pressure ventilation was set up, and smoke was cleared through the front windows of the unit. After the smoke was clear, a crew came up to the floor to assist. One of the crew members did not have his SCBA donned. After seeing this, we removed our SCBA to continue overhaul and salvage, but it was before air monitoring for CO and HCN.
View the report: SCBAs Removed Prior to Air Monitoring
Take-Aways: It's unlikely that your department has a meter for every chemical found in smoke. It's even less likely that your department has the resources to measure all the peeks during the entire overhaul phase to ensure you did not exceed an exposure limit. Researchers and scientists are screaming at us to wear our SCBAs. We are shortening our life expectancy by not listening to them. Would you smoke a cigarette while holding a newborn? Most of us would have a significant emotional response if we saw such a thing. Colonel Mike Mullane cautions us to guard against the "Normalization of Deviance," a.k.a. taking shortcuts. Not wearing an SCBA is merely that.
