FIREFIGHTER NEAR MISS: And the truck rolls away. Summary: No matter how hard we try, mistakes are an inevitable part of our existence. Consistently a leading factor in near miss events, human error can sometimes result in a life-threatening situation or, as in this report, a humorous and maybe a bit embarrassing story to share.
Event Description: Our station had decided to go to a local restaurant for breakfast on a cold rainy Saturday morning. We arrived at the restaurant and parked the ladder truck slightly angled behind the medic unit. I was in the middle of a conversation with our firefighter as we arrived and placed the apparatus in neutral. I was getting ready to set the brake when a firefighter asked me a question. In the process of answering the question, I was distracted and failed to engage the parking brake. We did not set out a wheel chock. We stood outside of the truck visiting for a few minutes then went into the restaurant. While preparing to order, we looked out the window and saw the engine pull up and turn on their emergency lighting. We then observed our ladder truck across the roadway in the yard of a nearby facility. After our initial panic, we were able to assess our situation. Our ladder truck had rolled around the medic unit, then straightened out and rolled out of the parking lot and across four lanes of a busy roadway. The apparatus then got stuck in the soft mud in the yard across the road. Fortunately, we had missed everything and were able to back out of the mud without incident and return to breakfast.
