BUSY WEEK: Great job with Sunday's training. Captains Lang and Duross did a great job organizing it all and keeping things moving. I was very impressed that we got 5 burns done and had everything back in service by 1300. Great job by everyone involved!
Thank you everyone who stepped up to help out during the storm. During the 3 day event we handled 46 calls for service. We typically do 50 calls in a month. Yesterday we managed to send an engine and crew to cover Sanford on their 2nd alarm (yes, another fire in the old mills.), and still covered two simultaneous ambulance calls in town. While many communities are having trouble covering calls, we seem to be doing quite well. Which I contribute to all of you. Thanks!

SHORTAGE OF VOLUNTEERS: You may have seen an article on WMTW featuring some of Goodwins Mills' and Hollis's bravest. I haven't been called by any Hollywood agents yet, but I expect a call soon. I've had conversations with many of you about staffing. We are one event away from a major crisis. You all know better than most just what it takes to be active on a call fire department, keep a job or go to school, balance family life and maintain your sanity. I'm afraid we're in for some serious problems if something isn't done to improve permanent full-time staffing of our fire stations. Hopefully, articles like the one Channel 8 did will help get the word out.

FIREFIGHTER LIFE SAFETY INITIATIVES: #4 EMPOWERMENT. While this may appear to be a challenging or even controversial statement, it simply means that every organization should provide an environment that allows its members to speak up regarding personal and organizational safety; without negative consequences for doing so (within a prescribed context), and without decentralizing the authority of the formal leader. The resources needed for all fire service organizations to institute Initiative #4, regardless of type or size, are already at our disposal, and the best part is that they are free. The goal is to have every member fully engaged during an emergency incident with a focus on doing the work in a proficient manner and looking out for one-another to avoid injuries and potential line of duty death.
