Weekly Update for Friday, December 22, 2017.

Merry Christmas!

----
Winter Storm Dylan:  Yup, they named after Lt Martin.  I've put on a storm coverage crew for tonight and tomorrow morning.  The weather service is calling for heavy icing tomorrow. We'll reassess the situation at 1000 tomorrow.
----
EMS Protocol Update:  The deadline is 1/8/2018. If you haven't completed the update training by then your license will be administratively suspended.  Update training is available on MEMSed at http://www.maine.gov/ems/providers/MEMSEd.html    Please provide Lt Daniels a copy of your completion certificate.
----
Live Fire Training: 1/6/2018 meet at teh station at 0700.  Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board. We have an acquired structure to burn in.
----
Last week's chimney fire training:  Great opportunity! We were the first to use the chimney fire prop at the Hollis Training Facility.  The prop is really good. We get to go through all the motions of an actual chimney fire.
----
Mandatory Training:  The annual BLS mandatories are coming up. February 10 at 0800 has been scheduled. Please make every effort to attend. Don't be "that guy".
----
Ice Fishing Derby: It's on for February 10th. Tickets and info are available in the watch desk. See Lt Daniels for details.
----
Alfred Rd & Kennebunk Pond Road Crashes:  How often do we respond to a crash at Route 111 and Kennebunk Pond Road?  In the past 4-years, we've responded to 10.  Four of them just this month. The State Police report responding to 18 since 2014.  I have a inquiry into DOT for traffic and crash totals.  Interestingly,  since 2014, in Lyman, we've had 291 motor vehicle crashed. 75 on Route 111, and 10 at the Kennebunk Pond Road intersection.
----
On Wednesday Congress passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R. 1),  this law also addressses several important issues affecting the fire and emergency service, including:
Fire Sprinklers: Since the devastating 2003 fire at the Station Nightclub in Rhode Island, the IAFC has urged Congress to incentivize business owners to retrofit their properties with fire-sprinkler systems. H.R. 1 provides this important incentive and allows the cost of sprinkler retrofits to be deducted as a Section 179 expense. This tax-policy change will allow countless businesses, restaurants, bars and other establishments to protect their employees and customers.
Volunteers: H.R. 1 helps simplify the management of length-of-service award programs (LOSAPs) for volunteer and combination fire departments as well as increases the maximum annual LOSAP contribution to $6,000.  (In Maine; the Legislature has passed law creating a LOSAP program. However, it isn't funded. There was a delay in appointing Trustees to oversee the program. Definitions of a "volunteer" may make many departments in Maine not eligible for the LOSAP benefit.  Stay tuned.)
----
RIT Class:  We will be hosting a Rapid Intervention Team class April 27, 28 and 29. This class is a pilot of the new MFSI RIT curriculum.
----
Effective use of UAVs: In Virginia; A 92-year-old man was lost overnight in a heavily wooded area. A drone found him. This was the first successful use of the technology since the Loudoun County, Va., Sheriff’s Office implemented it in September.

York County EMA has three drones that can be used in this type of search. The "YC UAV Team" is available to assist. Hopefully we'll never need it, but it is available to us.
-----
Vacation: I'll technically be on vacation next week.  If you need something, call or text me.
----
OPEN SHIFTS:  None at this time.
----

Have a great weekend and an enjoyable Christmas!
Chief
