Weekly update, Sunday, March 4, 2018

Sorry, I haven't done a blog for a couple weeks.  I was a little under-the-weather last week.

I received the following e-mail from Dr. Schmitz last week;

Good morning Chief Hooper,
.....appreciation of the efforts of Matthew Duross, Rocky Sanfilippo and Nicki Fowlie in caring for a stroke patient yesterday morning that was transported by your service (PCR #18297078). Their accurate assessment of the patient’s symptoms, time of onset and notification of an incoming stroke patient helped the department prepare for the patient’s arrival and directly contributed to the patient receiving t-PA without any significant delays. Their care of the patient and her family was outstanding. We sincerely appreciate their efforts, they all did a fantastic job!
Thank you,

Michael Schmitz, DO

I also received a follow up letter from Dr. Kim Perreault-Nichols, Dr. Andy Powell, Co-Directors, SMHC ED and Dr. Jane Morris, Director of MMC's Telestroke Network.  Which reiterated Dr. Schmitz e-mail.

Great job by the crew of Captain/Paramedic Duross, FF/Adv. EMT Sanfilippo, FF/BEMT Fowlie.

Firefighter Near Miss:  Electric Pole Arcing Causes Flash Burns and Eye Injury.
Sometimes the obvious hazard presented on an emergency scene isn’t the one that causes us harm. Fire crews respond to thousands of calls each year involving downed power lines with expectations of facing possible electrocution or an electrically sparked fire. While working to mitigate these obvious hazards, the crew involved in this week’s report found out the hard way that they were exposed to danger of a different sort.
