Lieutenant Harry Weymouth, SPFD. This is a repeat of the email I sent yesterday. I'm sure you've all heard that Lt. Harry Weymouth passed away early this morning of injuries from a motor vehicle crash. Harry was a fulltime lieutenant paramedic with South Portland FD stationed on Ladder 45 at Cash Corner. He was a per diem ED RN at Southern Maine Health, Biddeford & Sanford. He was also a callman with Buxton FD and a past Chief of the Groveville station. Our Ambulance 86 responded on the call on Thursday morning. Our crew transported the passenger of the second vehicle. Buxton transported Lt Weymouth. The Buxton paramedic tending to Lt Weymouth was a prior paramedic student of his. A CISD has been scheduled for Sunday evening for those who responded on the call. Once I have information on funeral arrangements, I'll pass that along. I have offered to send cover apparatus & crews to Buxton if they need it. Stand by on that.
If anyone needs to talk about this... if you were on the call or not, if you knew Harry or not, ...please find someone you trust to talk with. I'm available and so is Chaplain Ed 401-525-6866.

Firefighter Near Miss: Protect That Structure.
Summary: Structure protection in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) can be a dynamic, chaotic and challenging assignment. This environment, more than any other, has the possibility for responders working in unfamiliar situations.
Event Description: I worked as part of an engine crew for the U.S. Fire Service. We were doing structure protection in a rural area that was flat. The wind was blowing significantly, and we were assigned to protect some structures and hold the primary fire on the road. The fire was heading directly towards us and was spotting frequently in front of the main fire line. When it hit our location, our crew tried to protect several structures and vehicles. The flame front jumped the road, and our captain ordered us to begin a progressive hoseline on the fire with him on the nozzle. There were several spot fires around us, and our hose lay was eventually burned up. We were forced to jump into the engine and retreat. We left the area and moved to another location to protect some other structures that were being threatened. View the Report: Wildland Fire Endangers Crew
