Weekly Update for Saturday, August 11, 2018

OPEN SHIFTS: Today....1200-0700.
-----
Sorry for getting this out late this week. I spent yesterday as the Safety Officer for the live-in program's Firefighter 1 and 2 academy. It was a long day. This year's class is very impressive. Friday was the end of their first week and they are already working like it's their 3rd week.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at Deputy Johnston's roast at 1400 today. I mean the pig roast at the Harris house.
-----
Memorial Service for Lt Harry Weymouth:  Services will be held tomorrow at the Eastpoint Church, 345 Clarks Pond Parkway in South Portland. Service begins at 1500. Uniformed firefighters are asked to assemble at 1400. I suggest meeting at the station at 1300 to carpool. Departing the station by 1315.

RED Shirts: RED = Remember Everyone Deployed.  We typically think of our deployed military members when we think of RED. Which you all know is near and dear to my heart. But, let's not forget the Wildland Firefighters deployed to California. 20 are deployed from Maine right now. Their deployments are just as demanding and just as important as the military. In some ways, more so.

Firefighter near miss: Be Ready for Equipment Related Problems
Summary: No matter how well prepared we are, an unexpected equipment malfunction can send even the best operational plan into a tailspin. In this week’s report, an attack crew was making significant progress in extinguishing a structure fire when one member suddenly started losing air from an SCBA, barely making it out of the fire in time.
Event Description: We responded to a basement fire that eventually spread to the first floor. The fire made a rapid change in conditions with heavy fire then spreading from the basement to the roof. There was a total collapse towards the end of the incident. The first arriving crew made entry on side “Charlie” into the basement searching for the fire. Firefighters were advancing the hose line and attacking at the seat of the fire when they heard a sudden whooshing of air. The crew quickly realized an SCBA malfunction had occurred and initiated emergency SCBA procedures. Once it was recognized that the leak was at the connection point from cylinder to pack, the crew quickly made an emergency exit from the structure. By the time they had exited the structure, the member who experienced the SCBA failure had his mask sucked to his face.
