Firefighter Near Miss: Gas Explosion Knocks Down Captain
This week's Report of the Week highlights how even when we lead out an incident with the best intentions, such as doing a 360 size-up, surprises happen.
Event Description
Crews were called to a report of an attached garage fire. Upon arrival, the entire house was involved with vehicles in the garage starting to burn. An exposure on side D was also threatened.
The first engine was on scene within 8 minutes of the 911 call. Initially, a monitor nozzle was applied to the exposure on the D side to protect it. A 2-1/2” attack line was used to attack the fire in the house from side D; a 1-3/4” attack line was used to attack the vehicle fires.
While setting up a water supply, the officer of the first-due engine was walking around the back of the truck when the fuel tank of one of the vans exploded. This caused the captain to be thrown across the road. No injuries were reported, and crews continued suppression operations until mutual-aid companies arrived and the fire was brought under control.
