Weekly Update for Friday, September 7, 2018

A busy week. We've run 16 calls in the past 7 days. Unfortunately, that number includes two fatal motor vehicle crashes. That's rather unusual for us. From an operational point of view, the calls went well. I don't believe there was anything that we could've done differently that would've changed the outcomes. The skills, equipment and team work needed was there. Our mutual aid worked at its best. Each of you who responded did a terrific job under very stressful conditions. Nothing like wearing turnout gear in 67% humidity!  Thanks again for what you do to make our community a better place to live.
----
Duty Officer: Friday Night: Lt Martin. Saturday: Capt Daniels. Sunday: Lt Martin.
Duty Chief next week: DChf Harris.
This is our first weekend with the duty officer in place. There will be a duty officer available from 1800 Friday until 1800 Sunday.  Duty Chiefs will rotate every 7-days, Sunday to Sunday.
----
Paramedic Requests:  When a paramedic is needed, and we don't have one working, call a mutual aid paramedic right away. DO NOT put a tone on for an "in town" or "Goodwins Mills" medic.  Also, if the call is a Delta, or Echo (especially Echo) start the paramedic as soon as you leave our station.
See General Notice 18-1582.
----
Softball Game: We've been challenged by the Alfred FD to a softball game on Sept. 16 at 1500 at the softball field across the street from the Alfred Fire Station.  A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. I have given Alfred fair warning about our secret weapon, the "Jamaican Slugger".
----
New AEDs:  We've replaced our old Cardiac Science G3 AED's with new Cardiac Science G5 AEDs. Engine 83, Engine 84, Forestry 87 have these new devices on board. The one that will be going on Ladder 82 is in the classroom for you to look over. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with these AEDs.  Dayton Sand & Gravel has purchased one to be installed at their facility. The Lyman Selectmen have purchases one for the Lyman Transfer Station. Those will be installed soon. We will be providing training to the emploees at those sites too.
----
Physical Agility Test: This is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 17 starting at 1800.  The stations are set up in the bay. Please come practice.

Circuit training impact on volunteer firefighters’ cardiovascular health
U.S. Fire Administration; Current Issues and Events | Sept. 6, 2018
Some estimates show that only 20 percent of volunteer firefighters meet the VO2 max fitness level recommended by NFPA 1582. So how might volunteer firefighters best improve their cardiovascular fitness? A study published this year explored how circuit training may help.
