Lavender Report: Preventing Firefighter Cancer. The lavender report was prepared by the IAFC-VCOS and the NVFC as a Best Practices Guide for Preventing Firefighter Cancer. It provides guidance on 11 actions to help mitigate the risk of cancer. It's worth reading. You can find a copy here There are many practices listed that we can implement here. Like washing turnout gear, regularly. I've ordered NFPA 1851 compliant detergent for our washing gear. On-scene gross decontamination, we have ordered "Fire Wipes" to help you with that. If you have any ideas, suggestions or comments on what we can do here, please contact the Assistant Chief.

Cold Weather: Cold weather is upon us. The heating system for the bays has been turned on.
Please make sure the overhead doors close when leaving the station. Also, this is a good time to check your turnout gear.

Firefighter Near Miss: Absent Command Leads to Chaos: Arriving first-due on the scene places you in the driver’s seat for the incident. However, what happens to the incident when no one is driving? The first-due engine arrived on the scene of a working fire in a single-family dwelling and announced an offensive fast attack, then passed command. The second-due apparatus did not declare command (as they should have per SOP), resulting in a lack of direction for this entire event. Ultimately, five companies were working on the fire scene; there were opposing hose lines, a crew on the roof that was not necessary and, for no reason, RIT decided to breach a wall. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. View the Report: Incident command never established during fire attack
