PAPERLESS EMS RUN REPORTING: As many of you know I am a strong proponent of electronic PCR reporting. Paperless EMS run reports are long overdue. Several Chiefs in the area are in agreement on this. All for very similar reasons. We are pushing hard on this issue and are working to make use of a program already in place called "Hospital Hub". We will be having a Hospital Hub demo later this month.
To make our case stronger, and demonstrate use of Hospital Hub, I have modified our policy on leaving paper PCRs at a hospital. Directive 2342 has been modified to add paragraph 7.0 which reads:
"7.0) Providing a PCR to a hospital or pharmacy:
7.1) Crews should not remain at the hospital for the sole purpose of completing a PCR. Crews should expedite putting the ambulance back in service and return to the station.
7.2) The hospital and/or pharmacy shall be provided with an EMS quick sheet (Form 2342/1) prior to the ambulance departing the facility.
7.3) The PCR shall be completed while enroute back to quarters and faxed to the hospital emergency department or pharmacy from the station. "
So, you are only required to leave a Quick Sheet at the Hospital. Return to the station to complete the PCR and fax it to the ED. Please contact me if you have any questions.

CHIMNEY FIRES: As come into the winter heating season, chimney fires can be expected. Our chimney equipment has been moved to Engine 83. Our role at a chimney fire, is to remove the fire from the chimney and check for and deal with an extension. The goal is to leave the home safe for the homeowner. And reduce our a possibility of going back. So, if the chimney can easily be cleaned, do it. If its pretty plugged up, or the chimney is damaged, advise to homeowner not to use it an call a chimney sweep. Google "Chimney Sweeps Maine". We're there to do our best to resolve the problem.

BLOOD DRIVES: Robin Howard has taken on the job of being our liaison with the Red Cross for blood drives. Our next blood drive is scheduled for December 8th.

Firefighter Near Miss: Hidden Danger Found During Car Fire. This week’s report highlights how easy it is to assume bystanders are providing accurate information. The lieutenant at this vehicle fire conducted a thorough risk assessment and 360. However, due to misinformation provided by a witness, a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) from a gas can in the back seat of a sedan nearly injured one firefighter. The BLEVE engulfed the firefighter from the knees up. Fortunately, proper use of PPE left him warm but uninjured.
Event Description: I was the nozzleman on a three-person engine company responding to a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, I stretched a 1 3/4" hose line (150"). I already had full PPE and SCBA with a mask on, and I was “on” air. As I approached the four-door sedan, I had active fire in the passenger compartment. I also noticed it was parked on the road next to a utility pole with all three services (cable, telephone, and power) but no transformer noted. The pole was not involved in the fire.
We asked the owner if there was anyone or anything inside we should be aware of and he responded "No." I applied the straight stream to the ground, attempting to cool the undercarriage and gas tank. As I altered the stream to a 45-degree fog and re-directed it into the rear passenger window, it erupted into a massive fireball. I was told I was completely engulfed in flames from my knees up. I was about two feet from the vehicle. I was warm but not injured. I applied the stream as I backed up a few feet. The fire intensified but was put out in twenty minutes. We later found a 2 1/2 gallon fuel can in the back seat that the owner had forgotten to tell us about. The pump operator and Lieutenant maintained watch over the pole and overhead wires.
