The Fire Service and the month of December. Historically, December is a bad month for Firefighters. During this time of good will we are busier with more mental health calls, home fires, illnesses, etc. Not only does our call to serve the public increase, but also our call to help each other.  Firefighter injuries and deaths seem to tick upwards in December. This is a very interesting article by Billy Goldfeder on Firefighters and December.

Inaccurate Dispatch Info Puts FFs at Risk:
Responding to any call requires the most accurate information available. When the incident involves technical rescue, every element of the response requires extra attention, from call intake to event conclusion. Event Description: Fire dispatch sent our engine out to a child with a traumatic injury, and we quickly responded. While we were en route, the call was upgraded to an ice rescue. As we were already moving, the crew did not don the surface-ice rescue suits. Ordinarily, we would have done this before leaving the station.  At the scene, our medic unit reported a child who was head above the surface clinging to the ice shelf for support and two people on the ice attempting a rescue. The medic crew talked the two would-be rescuers off the ice and attempted to walk out to the child. One medic’s leg fell through the ice in ankle deep water, so they retreated to the shoreline. As our engine arrived on scene, the firefighter began dressing in the surface-ice rescue suit while the officer sized up the situation. The officer, carrying a rescue rope, approached the scene wearing a PFD and turnout pants. He determined the dive van was delayed and immediate action would be required to effect this rescue. While unsuccessfully attempting to tie off and without removing his turnout pants, the officer entered the water and rescued the child.  View the Report: Inaccurate Dispatch Info Puts FFs at Risk
