Mutual Aid to Saco: I want to express my sincere thanks to DChf Harris, Capt Daniels, FF Cole, FF Boucher FF St. Germain and FF Eichel for braving the sub-zero temperatures on Thursday morning at Saco's fire. You represented our department very well. Below is an e-mail I received this afternoon from Chief Duross:
"From Fire Chief John Duross, City of Saco

All,
On behalf of the Saco Fire Department and the City of Saco, please allow me to express our sincere gratitude to you and the members of your organization for the assistance you provided to us on January 31, 2019; structure fire, 311 Seaside Avenue, first call received 01:32 hours.
The TV weather forecasters got this one right, the conditions were downright brutal. The professionalism and work ethic of the firefighters, police officers, school bus drivers, public works employees and support volunteers was exemplary, deserving of recognition, and greatly appreciated. Through it all, I witnessed firefighters and support agencies doing what they have been trained to do but, in the most nasty adverse conditions; no complaining, no whining, they just did it. We can all be proud of the manner in which our firefighters/employees/volunteers performed their duties.
I also wanted to share that, we continue to hear from many members of our community expressing their grateful appreciation of what not just Saco Firefighters and responders did but also recognizing and appreciating the hard work of our mutual aid fire departments and support agencies. Here is just a sample….
We live at Baywood Colony, and we want to thank your team for saving our complex from further damage from Thursday’s fire. It was a terribly bitter cold night with high winds and the hours and hours you all put in to make sure we were safe is just unbelievable! And of course a thanks to the other departments that assisted!
It is my hope that you will share with your members our appreciation for their service to the Saco Fire Department. We know that we could not have gotten the job done without the help from all of you.
Thanks again,
Chief Duross"

Compassion: We often say there is no "routine" in this business. Yet, there are times when we get caught up in the routine. Calls tend to get repetitive. Same people, same problems, same routine. I've heard it referred to as the "300th Call Syndrome". It happens to all of us from time-to-time. We stop treating each patient as an individual and group the difficult ones all together. This link is to an article called "A return to Compassion" It's a very thought provoking read. It will make you think about the routine and stereotypes.
